Ingredients

Scale

Meatballs

  • 26 ounces frozen precooked meatballs

Sauce

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • Dash of allspice
  • Dash of nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste

To Serve

  • Egg noodles or mashed potatoes
  • Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the slow cooker: Spray the inside of your slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
  2. Add meatballs: Place the 26 ounces of frozen precooked meatballs evenly in the bottom of the slow cooker.
  3. Melt butter and make roux: In a medium skillet over medium-high heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter. Whisk in 3 tablespoons of flour to form a smooth paste (roux), cooking for about 1 to 2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  4. Add liquids: Gradually whisk in 2 cups of beef broth and 1 cup of heavy cream, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
  5. Season and thicken sauce: Stir in 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard, a dash of allspice, and a dash of nutmeg. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, stirring regularly until it thickens slightly. Season with salt and pepper to your preference.
  6. Combine sauce and meatballs: Pour the prepared sauce evenly over the meatballs in the slow cooker.
  7. Cook: Cover and cook on high for 2 hours or on low for 4 to 5 hours, until meatballs are heated through and the sauce is flavorful and creamy.
  8. Serve: Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve the Swedish meatballs over cooked egg noodles or creamy mashed potatoes.

Notes

  • Use precooked frozen meatballs to save time; homemade meatballs can be used but require adjusting cooking times.
  • For a thicker sauce, increase the flour to 4 tablespoons or reduce the liquid slightly.
  • Nutmeg and allspice add warm, subtle flavors; do not omit for authentic taste.
  • Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and freeze well for up to 3 months.
  • Egg noodles or mashed potatoes complement the creamy sauce perfectly, but rice or steamed vegetables work as alternatives.
