Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

  • 8 cups Granny Smith Apples, peeled and cubed (1kg / 2.2 pounds)
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract

Oat Topping

  • 1 cup All Purpose Flour
  • 1 and 1/2 cups Rolled Oats
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 3/4 cup Melted Butter (lightly salted or unsalted)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Spray a 9×13 inch baking dish with non-stick spray and set aside to prevent sticking during baking.
  2. Mix Apple Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the peeled and cubed apples with brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Toss well to ensure the apples are evenly coated with the spices and sugar.
  3. Transfer Apples to Dish: Spread the coated apples evenly into the prepared baking dish, smoothing the surface for an even layer.
  4. Prepare Oat Topping: In another bowl, mix together flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Add the melted butter and vanilla extract, stirring until the mixture is thoroughly combined.
  5. Assemble Topping: Crumble the oat mixture evenly with your fingers over the top of the apple filling, covering it completely to create a crumbly topping layer.
  6. Bake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 50 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling at the edges.
  7. Cool and Serve: Remove the apple crisp from the oven and let it cool on the counter for about 10 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an added treat.

Notes

  • Using Granny Smith apples provides a tart flavor that balances well with the sweet topping.
  • Peeling the apples is optional but recommended for a smoother texture.
  • If preferred, you can substitute rolled oats with quick oats, but the texture will be slightly softer.
  • This dessert can be made ahead and refrigerated; reheat before serving.
  • For a gluten-free option, use gluten-free oats and flour substitutes.
